Mexico 2023

Mexico’s colors, textures, and architecture feel like living design archives. Every detail, from hand-painted pillars, to carved stone to coastal botanicals, reminds me how deeply travel, culture, and nature shape the visual stories I create.

What Makes Piper Adonya’s Work Distinct

Piper Adonya brings together illustration, surface design, art direction, and creative consulting to create work that exists beyond a single discipline.

Her studio practice blends visual storytelling with strategic design thinking, allowing her to approach projects from both an artistic and conceptual perspective. While many artists work within a single medium, Piper’s work moves fluidly between editorial illustration, surface design, pattern collections, and brand storytelling, making her a natural collaborator for companies seeking distinctive visual direction.

Known for her expressive botanical language, layered pattern compositions, and integration of written reflections and quotes, Piper’s work carries a recognizable voice, one that balances bold multicultural, maximalist energy with soulful intention.

Whether creating artwork for products, publications, or interior environments, her goal is always the same: to design work that feels alive, culturally meaningful, and deeply connected to the human experience. Everyone should see themselves reflected in art.

Black Barbie, A Netflix Documentary is the kind of project that not only tells history but shapes history. I love being a part of such important work.

I worked on Black Barbie, A Documentary, in collaboration with 9B Collective, which made its official world premiere at SXSW 2023, was later picked up by Netflix and Shondaland, and has since won two Daytime Emmy Awards.

Black Barbie is a documentary on the making of the first Black Barbie. I had the honor of working on title card illustration, hand lettering, film logo lock-up, timeline layout design, and lower thirds graphic design for the independent release.

The film is written and directed by Lagueria Davis, whose aunt worked at Mattel and championed the first Black Barbie Doll, and was produced alongside Aaliyah Williams.

The sheer amount of time a child spends with their dolls alone is enough to pause and reflect on what the toys they are playing with look like, and how much influence having one that actually looks like you really means. This is the kind of project that not only tells history but shapes history, and I love being a part of such important work!

Studio Capabilities

Bottega Adonya operates as an independent creative studio led by illustrator, designer, and art director Piper Adonya. The studio collaborates with brands, creative teams, and publications seeking expressive visual storytelling rooted in nature, culture, and thoughtful design.

Artist Philosophy

I believe design should do more than decorate a space, it should free the viewer, challenge culture, & nourish the spirit.

My work has botanical expressionism and soulful maximalism as a focus, where layered multicultural patterns, expressive line-work, and nature-rooted imagery invite people to pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves. In a world moving faster and deeper into technology, I believe our natural spaces should bring us back to something timeless; nature, creativity, and the quiet wisdom of the human spirit.

Through illustration, pattern design, and my Dear Creative writings, I encourage artists and dreamers to keep creating and remember that their voice matters. What we create can literally transform culture. Art has the power to challenge her view before they realize they are being transformed by her.
