Pillars of Design
Piper Adonya’s work is defined by rough, expressive linework, layered textures, and a soulful approach to color. She loves pushing design boundaries with sketchy lines and multilayered maximalism. Defined by gestural linework, her aesthetic bridges the gap between raw emotion and functional design.
To explore the unique facets of Piper’s work, please select a pillar below:
Surface Design: Narrative and nature-driven patterns curated for upholstery, wallcoverings, and lifestyle textiles.
Editorial Illustration: Concept-focused vignettes, including the Joy Collection, characterized by purposeful, sketchy lines and visual storytelling.
Fine Art: Soul-centered works, such as the Play Collection, an ancestral portrait series exploring the feminine spirit through botanical maximalism and visible under paintings designed to inspire your own return to creativity, nature, and self.
Art Direction: The intersection of vision and execution, showcasing how these disciplines unite to build immersive brand identities.
This body of work is a living archive, with new studies in botanical texture and pattern added regularly. For a window into her current process and daily creative developments, follow Bottega Adonya on Instagram.
Black Barbie, A Netflix Documentary
the kind of project that not only tells history but shapes history.
I love being a part of such important work.
I worked on Black Barbie, A Documentary, in collaboration with 9B Collective, which made its official world premiere at SXSW 2023, was later picked up by Netflix and Shondaland, and has since won two Daytime Emmy Awards.
Black Barbie is a documentary on the making of the first Black Barbie. I had the honor of working on title card illustration, hand lettering, film logo lock-up, timeline layout design, and lower thirds graphic design for the independent release.
The film is written and directed by Lagueria Davis, whose aunt worked at Mattel and championed the first Black Barbie Doll, and was produced alongside Aaliyah Williams.
The sheer amount of time a child spends with their dolls alone is enough to pause and reflect on what the toys they are playing with look like, and how much influence having one that actually looks like you really means. This is the kind of project that not only tells history but shapes history, and I love being a part of such important work!
